Single-Game Football Tickets Go On Sale July 31

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics will sell a very limited number of single-game football tickets for the Nittany Lions’ 2009 season on Friday, July 31. The online ticket sale, open to alumni and the general public, will begin at 10:00 a.m. at www.gopsusports.com.

This one-day sale offered by Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics ends when all tickets have been sold, which last year took just minutes. All orders must be placed online at www.gopsusports.com. Phone and counter orders are not available.

The ticket sale is for home games only. For away-game ticketing information, visit www.gopsusports.com. For questions, fans should call 800-NITTANY, e-mail golions@psu.edu, or visit the athletics Web site at www.gopsusports.com.

Thursday

Homecoming weekend began on a chilly Thursday night, with the arrival crew of Chris, Nick, Amanda, and me. Kirsten showed up and we headed to the Darkhorse Tavern for some quick Yuengs and wings. Jessi, Matt and Kevin met us there. After a few quick Tonto's, we headed down the street to the Rathskellar. We played many games of quarters. Jessi and Chris did a few shots before we headed to the Shandygaff. I had a few too many pitchers of Captain and Coke before we headed to College Pizza.

Friday

The morning was a little rough. On our way down to Café 210, we stopped by the HUB to pick up some homecoming flair. This year, they were also selling Penn State Tailgate cook books. I jokingly ask if Mad and Suz had a recipe in it. They do! As we were dressed in Steelers Jersey's, they also let us know that Franco Harris (The homecoming marshal) would be at the Alumni center at 1300 hrs.

We got down to the Café for a few quick Teas before it was time to head up to the Alumni Center. Matt, Kevin, Jessi, Nick and I got our picture taken with Franco. We also got some free ice cream before headed back down to Café.

We were surprised by a truckload of cheerleaders. They were cruising up College Ave tossing out white towels (AKA shop towels) for the game tomorrow. While down pitchers of Lager, we ran into Dale Jr. He's getting married to "that's how I roll" girl in February.

We were joined by Shelley and Nick. Around 6, we headed down College Ave to get into our parade viewing spot. We stopped into V&S Sandwiches for some cheese steaks and pierogies. We also jumped back into the Darkhorse for another quick drink before headed down to the corner of college and Shortlidge to watch the parade with Rich, Janelle, and Jaime.

There were many good floats. My favorite was the wedding crashers float. The Penn State Cycling club also had an octocycle out that. It was crazy and always looked like it was going to crash out of control.

After the Blue band closed out the parade, we headed to Saloon for some Monkey Boys. Steve and Todd were playing. We were joined by more of the booze clowns and Bill and friends.

The Saloon was totally infested with Badger fans; Chris almost head-butted one of them. I was "helping" them by suggesting that they try a Monkey Boy or two.

Later, Matt and Kevin headed up to Leslie's apartment for a party; I am sure they did not really need anymore alcohol, but you know how it goes. The rest of us called it a night.

Saturday

Our morning started at the Nittany Lion Inn. Carter was the first to arrive, followed shortly by Jessi and Matt. Mad and Suz then rolled in. Chris finished up the convoy and we headed over to the stadium under a cloudless blue sky.

Mad and Suz entered us in the 2007 Alumni Tailgating Competition. This tailgate was extra special. We were worried that Vaughn (the person we don't like to mention) would show up and ruin the whole thing. As we rolled up on lot 13, I even surveyed the line of cars with binoculars just to see if he was in line. Luckily, he wasn't. Nick and Amanda tossed the football around while we waited for the lot to open.

The set-up began. Chris cooked Bacon, sausage, eggs and quesadilla wraps for breakfast. Larry brought 2 rings of ring baloney and cheese combo. It was excellent.

The food tables were organized to properly display our assortment of tailgating goodies. There were 2 tables of food and 1 table of drinks and desserts. Jessi helped to put up the decorations, including a blind referee piñata.

The first table was set up for the Nacho bar. You could make your own nachos with a choice of many toppings and cheeses. Chris also made Chili. What wasn't immediately shoved into people's hands went here to add to the nacho goodness. There was also a bowl of show limes.

The second table was for football field taco dip, lemon shrimp, baked chicken roll ups, burnt kielbasa and meatballs with cheese dip. At various time, we also had deep fried turkey, zucchini sticks, corn dogs, butterfly shrimp, breaded raviolis, freedom toast sticks and freedom fries. Rich and Janelle also brought jell-o shots.

The final table housed the stadium cake, lime macaroons, nut bars, badger droppings, cocoa crispy treats, brownies and pretzels, a pitcher of whisky sours and the liquor pump; which consisted of the great Captain Morgan himself. The lime macaroons were my favorite.

Since I was nervous about not getting a group photo this time, we took the first one at 1130 around the dessert table.

Carter did an excellent job with the music. There was a good combination of Rock, Country, Penn State music and even a little bit of jazz. It was a huge hit. People were dancing along. Carter also set up his extreme polish horseshoes uphill of the canopies.

The tailgating judges were supposed to show up between 1200 and 1330. Suz and Carter even set up a signal to queue the Penn State music. Suz would do the safety signal (show picture) when the judges arrived.

Nick put on the Nittany Lion suit from Chad. Amanda had on a Nittany Lion tail. Both of them were whipping people with their tails. Nick got interviewed by the big ten network while waiting in line for the port-o-johns.

As it got closer to game time, the majority of our tailgaters showed up. We took group photo #2 with a lot more tailgaters.

Penn State Wisconsin

People were nervous about the game. Coming into Beaver Stadium, the Badgers were ranked 19 in the AP polls. This was our first meeting with a ranked opponent this season. (Meat chicken and Illinois were unranked when we played them). This year's homecoming contest posted the 6th largest crowd.

The lions quickly took a bite out of the Badgers by capitalizing on a Badger fumble on the 1st play of the game. 3 plays later, Penn State lead by 7.

On Penn States next drive, Kevin Kelly nailed a 30 yard field goal to make it 10 - 0.

Wisconsin answered back with a 77 yard touchdown drive to make it 10 - 7. Penn State was able to drive in 2 more touchdowns before half time.

The Lion returned explosively in the second half on both offense and defense. Morelli lead the first drive of the second half for 74 yards. Golden made a 19 yard completion. Kinlaw made big runs of 19 and 10 yard runs and capped the set with a 2 yard TD run.

Junior quarterback Daryll Clark entered the game in the 4th quarter for the final scoring drive.

It was a very good day for the Lions. Morelli went 16 of 28 and threw no interceptions. Butler led the wideouts with seven receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown.

After the ringing victory bell, the combined Blue Band and Alumni Blue Bands took the field for a recap of the half time show. Official Stats

During the game, the tailgaters finished the liquor pump and refilled it. The temperature dropped off quite a bit. After the game, many tailgaters enjoyed sitting around the fireplace.

After the game, Nick fired up some Mexicali burgers with fresh guacamole on the grill.

We had people from many people at this tailgate, in addition to team CT. Kim flew in Colorado. Florida Chad has now moved to Maryland. Kirsten also drove up from Maryland. Steve and Tiffany came in from Atlanta. Jason and Jessi came up from Virginia. As always, we had plenty of folks from all over Pennsylvania.

After 16.5 hours of tailgating, we finally packed up around 2330 and called it a night.

Sunday

Sunday morning was a cool but clear day to packing up and reorganizing for the ride home. We made went downtown for some last minute flair shopping, had lunch at baby's before taking a Victory Lap through town.

My loving wife was sick of hearing me complain about not being able to find hotel room for Notre Lame so she found, dragged me out to see and bought me a camper. She definitely is the best wife ever.

With a price tag of only $375, It's not much to look. I will be something to see when it getting a blue and white makeover in the spring.

It's an 18' dual axle travel trailer that current sleeps 4 (and eventually 5). You'll probably see her out there starting with the Notre Lame game in September.

Thanks to all of you who voted.
The tailgates are

9-8-2007 Notre Dame;
10-13-2007 Wisconsin (HC); and,
11-10-2007 Temple (Away).

As happens every January, hotel reservations need to be made for the regular season. Chris and I will be making reservations at IMI and Sleep Inn respectively.Due to problems in 2006 and the fact that I'm married (and thus own nothing ;-) ), I will only be making reservations for eople who pay me in full ($85/weekend) before Jan 19th.

Please contact Chris (cfluck@gdeb.com) or me (Rob@psualum.com) if you want a spot with us. Generally, all hotels in the area will be completely booked by the end of this month and then you'll be SOL.

Northwestern/Oktoberfest Newsletter

Per his excellency the coordinator...

A cold grey Pennsylvania sky greeted us for our Oktoberfest tailgate. We lined up outside of Lot 13 at 0655. We had just over an hour to kill before the lots opened. Chris start the morning off properly with a Lager. It was a brisk 45 degrees. The fog rolled in while we were waiting.

The parking attendants opened the fields at 0755 and we made a bee line to our new parking spot. Changes in the regulations gave our old spot to “brown” preferred parking, so our new spot was along the mid-field fence. This is where we parked for HC4.

As set up began, Carter cooked breakfast on the grill. Mad and Suzanne brought out the Stuffin’ muffins and other breakfast treats. The morning fog lifted so we could see the stadium, but the sun didn’t come out. Chris and I got in a morning game of Polish horseshoes before the shoes were overtaken by tables and canopies.

When Carter unleashed the music, Tom brought out the beer bong. Many happy campers joined including Vaughn. Many people viewed it as a photo opportunity. Carter’s new stereo modification included 2 speaker towers on workstands. It was louder than anything in the parking lot.

Just in case you didn’t get enough at breakfast, Mad and Suz put out a collection of baked snacks including black forest bars, peanut brittle bars ,buckeye ball bars, picnic bars (chocolate and coconut), blueberry cheesecake brownies, carnutty bars (caramel, nuts & cream cheese), turtle brownies, truffle brownies, candy bar brownies (peanuts, chocolate & peanut butter frosting), butter bars (with blue sprinkles), almond toffee brownies, and raspberry streusel bars. It was quite the spread.

Matt cranked up the deep fryer for lunch. We had French toast sticks, pierogies, onion petals and cheese balls. Mad and Suz pulled out the stops. The “big ol' pork roast with sauerkraut” was cooked in the new propane slow cooker (a wedding gift) and Todd made bratwurst on the grill. Matt’s Ma and Pa brought out a baked bean dish and cheeses. Larry and Carol brought some awesome ring baloney with cheese. Mmmm.

We snapped the group photo just after lunch against the back of the truck just before game time. Intermittent rain started.

The game started with a C-17 flyover. It was much lower than I was expecting. Penn State dominated the “mildcats” on the field. Their only score was from an interception in the 2nd quarter. Deon Bulter (#3) set the school receiving yardage record. Tony Hunt (#26) passed the legendary Lenny Moore on State’s career rushing list. In the four quarter, Penn State picked up a fumble. It was ran back and by {insert name here} and dove in the end zone to make it 40-7. Unfortunately, the refs ruled it an incomplete pass and tacked on a big penalty. JoePa was not happy. Either way, the game ended on a good note as our record improved 3-2. “Me-ouch” indeed.

In a light post-game rain, there was a little light left in the sky. Even more food was cooked. Mad and Suz made mini-ruebens, mini-racheals and sauerkraut pockets. I cooked up a batch of bacon-cheddar burgers. Matt deep fried the turkey.

The rain stopped after dark and it warmed up a bit. Many tailgaters warmed up by the fireplace. The beer bong reappeared and Vaughn bonged most of a bottle of bailey’s.

We finally decided to pack it up after the monsoon started. We rolled out at 2330 for a total of 16.5 hours of tailgating. Thanks to everyone who came out. This was really a good time.

And despite the administation’s best effort, everyone had a good time.

The Lions match up with the university of illinois' fighting illini on Saturday, October 21st as they celebrate Homecoming 2006!
Gametime is 12pm - and parking lots open at 7am - we'll be there when they open the gates armed with breakfast treats and hot beverages. We'll be parking in the far side of Lot 13 - look for the PSU flags and submarine flag topper -

Oktoberfest 2006

Guten tag!

Join us as we welcome the Nittany Lions back to Happy Valley and celebrate Oktoberfest 2006 on Saturday, September 30th!

The Lions host the northwestern wildcats at 3:30pm - the game will be televised on ABC. The wildcats have weathered a difficult season/ year already, but this is Big Ten Football and the Lions need to be ready. northwestern has a young and agile quarterback - named Kafka - here's hoping the Lion's D will Metamorphosize his backside.

Accuweather's current forecast is clouds and sun with a high of 60 degrees (Real Feel 57) - and at night it's going to be in the 40s - there's a chance of thunderstorms - no accumulation is in the forecast - but it's best to be prepared...

The parking lots open at 8am - we will be there waiting in line when they do - Our goal, as always, is lot 13 - you will be able to find us by looking for the Diesel flags and the submarine flag topper.

Parking changes

As feared, the Parking Committee has reared it's ugly head and has altered the parking maps.

Lot 13 is still available to Yellow Parking (note - only pre-paid) - but a large portion (ie, where we've been tailgating the last few years) has been sectioned off for Blue (prefered general admission) parking.

So there will be changes if you don't have a parking pass - AND our location will be changed as well.

For the Akron game the new "blue" lot did not fill up by game time - but the yellow lot(s) looked pretty packed. We chose alternative parking (ie Eisenhower parking garage) for our tailgate due to the rain, but we'll report back after youngstown state with a first hand account of the new system.

belive it's finally here. We've got plenty of new tricks up our sleeves to make this tailgating season even better than last year.

Per tailgating coordinator:

Soaked to the bone.

If April showers bring May flowers, the flower gardens are going to look great. Much rain dampened, but did not quench the spirit of this tailgate. If you were out for this one, you are a trooper.

The convoy arrived at the parking lot at 0800 hrs amidst a steady rain at would turn the fields into a bog. Many folks were waiting for the opening of the grass lots, but being on pavement kept everything and everyone from getting muddy.

The early morning routine took a bit longer than normal, due to new flagpoles all around. With our tip money from last time [link], we built a car mounted flag pole for Madeline and Suzanne and a new flagpole for Matt M. The canopies were very important today.

The morning's breakfast was cooked by the Carter Clan. Team Amazing tailgaters brought out many treats, including a new one called Stuffin' muffins. They were stove top stuffing shells with scrambled eggs inside and topped with various breakfast meats and cheese. They were delicious.

For the specialty drink, Mad and Suz mixed up a batch of "Orangebowlina" in celebration of our Orange Bowl victory. We also had plenty of coffee drinks to wake up and warm up cold and wet tailgaters.

Our propane fireplace was lit helped to dry out wet tailgaters. The Blue Band stopped by to play a few tunes for us. They also warmed up their hands on the fireplace. Mid-morning, were visited by the Cops. They heard that we had an open fire. We quickly dismissed them by pointing out the attached propane tank.

Rain gutters fashioned out of plastic bags and sides were added to the canopies since the rain wasn't letting up. The gutters allowed tailgaters to walk between the canopies without getting wet from the rain dripping between each canopy.

Suzanne P and Vaughn started a high kick contest. I'm not sure how this came about, but it ended with each doing splits on the pavements. The photo of Vaughn is an instant classic.

Lunchtime was our usual frenzy of gourmet tailgating food. Matt turned on the fryer and made turkey, pickles, wings and jalapeno poppers. Chris F grilled up sausage and peppers. Josh made his favorite beer bratwurst and onions. The Marburgers brought homemade Italian sandwiches and Victory Ale from Philly. Shelley brought pepperoni bread. Madeline and Suzanne had more goodies and also brought out blue jello shots.

The rain continued for game time. JoePa said of the fans, I am constantly amazed that people would come to watch a scrimmage in this kind of weather.

After the game, many of us headed up to check out the carnival rides. This is the second year the carnival has been our next door neighbor. The bumper cars were a lot of fun.

I also visited Smitty's tailgate. He was our tailgating neighbor with the RV during DDT4. He had kept an eye on us during the off season and was impressed with our setup.

In the evening, the rain finally let up. We turned on the lights for about an hour and got to test out the new propane light for the kitchen. Duck cooked the beer can chickens and I made bacon cheddar burgers.

The party continued until midnight when everything was packed up. Despite the crappy weather, many people made it out. Caitlyn, a first time tailgater, was out until the end. It goes to show that everyone knows we will have a good time in any weather. Next time, we're bringing a rain gauge.

The next tailgate is only 4 days away. I'm so excited that I can almost taste the good food that we've got in store.

If you already did your shopping, double check the quantities to be sure you bring enough. If you would still like to contribute, please let me know. I can find a way for you to help out.

All,

With our next tailgate a mere 46 days away, I would like to plan a Flagpole Building Day for those of us in Groton. Our tailgate was been sadly short on flagpoles last season and this season doesn't look much better.

Since I will probably still be working second shift, it needs to be on a Saturday morning. I will be out of town April 1-4, so we can either meet March 25th or April 8. Please let me know if you'd like to come and which date works for you. I'll be supplying things like PVC glue, 2x4s and drywall screws. Everything else, we can pick up at the store.

At a minimum, we'll be putting together a flagpole for the Heavy Chevy and a smaller car-model for Team Amazing Tailgaters. If you'd like to put one together for you truck too, just let me know and show up.

While we wait to cheer our boys on at the Orange Bowl, I would like to pass on some tailgating info for 2006 football season. While I would have liked to poll everyone like last year, the planners and I had a unanimous vote. The following tailgates were selected based on time of year, quality of opponent and special event weekends:

As you all know Homecoming (DDT6), our biggest tailgate of the year, is just around the corner. This year in honor of it being on Halloween weekend, we are having a full costume tailgate. 3:30 kickoff for Central Michigan

Penn State has announced that the September 17th match-up against Central Michigan will be televised (ESPN Plus) and that gametime has been moved to 3:30pm. Click on the link below for the whole story at GoPSUsports.com.

Planning to commence soon

While it's hazy and hot outside, the air will soon be cool and crisp for football. That, of course, means that tailgating season is just around the corner. There are currently 45 days until DDT5. Planning shall hopefully commence on the week of Aug 8 with the sending of invitations. This is a tad earlier than normal, but necessary since the tailagates are so close this season.

PSU has issued the 2005 Stadium Guide. The Guide is in PDF form and has information including rules and regulations regarding the parking areas and inside the stadium. There's an updated football parking map and stadium seating charts.

Centre Daily Times - Construction affects Football Parking

I don't think that this affects the Diesel Tailgate plans much - that is, lot 13 is still intact (thank goodness for the cows). I'll give the parking office a call a little closer to the season to confirm.

Pep Rally at Beaver Stadium

They're having a Pep Rally at Beaver Stadium September 2nd (Friday night), the day before the season opener.

According to gopsusports.com (where you can get the whole story), more than 20,000 fans attended last year's event, and they are expecting even more this year. The event is free (and so is parking) and will include a pep rally with Head Coach Joe Paterno and the squad, a Blue Band concert, cheerleaders, dance team and the Nittany Lion. Friday night's celebration will also feature some added surprises and prize give aways along Curtin Road and provide the community with the opportunity to meet the 2005 Nittany Lion Football team. The night will be capped off once again with a spectacular display of Zambelli's fireworks.

Festivities outside the stadium will start at 6:30 p.m. Events inside the stadium are scheduled to begin at 8:00 pm. Fans are directed to use Stadium Gates A & B to enter the stadium.

September home games

The game times for the first 3 games of the season have been announced. The games are all at home and non-conference.

South Florida kickoff at 3:30pm. The 3:30 kickoff means that the parking lots will be open at 8am.

The Cincinnati kickoff is at 12pm. 12pm start time means that the lots will open at 7am.

Kickoff for the Central Michigan game is scheduled for 1:30pm. Not sure what time the lots will open; I'll have to give the parking office a call.

Central Michigan is the Diesel Tailgate (DDT5) - please check the Diesel website for more information regarding the festivities.
